Recap of I Stink at Negotiating

Last Thursday’s trip to ASMP’s I Stink at Negotiating seminar was very informative and fun!

We learned from Blake Discher many interesting points about negotiating with clients such as:

    • Never to quote your price on the initial phone call
    • Ask your potential client, “Did they give you a budget?”  They’re response=how much you could be getting paid!
    • If you get frustrated or angry, or just need a break for a few minutes, say that the FedEx guy is here with a package.  Nobody can say no to the FedEx guy!
    • Always price by the shot, never by the hour
    • Send thank you cards to everyone- even if you didn’t get the job.  This sets you apart from the other guys!

Afterwards, we got to meet with a lot of local professional photographers.  It was a great time, hopefully more people will be able to come to our next event!

    I Stink at Negotiating!

Next week, Photo Society is taking a trip to Kansas City to see the ASMP seminar, I Stink at Negotiating with Blake Discher!

Do you panic when you have to discuss money with a client? Do you talk too fast, ramble or sound indignant? Do you give in too fast to a lower price or broad licensing terms? Join Blake Discher for his highly acclaimed “Strictly Business 2″ lecture on how to win jobs. Blake Discher will teach you the steps to become a top negotiator. This critical skill can change your business in the most profound way — more and better work! Blake will walk you through real world scenarios, show you how to listen and talk to prospects turning them into loyal clients.

We will meet at the Hastings parking lot, please be there at 3:45, BEFORE 4:00 BECAUSE THAT IS WHEN WE ARE LEAVING!!! We will then drive to Kansas City and eat dinner, then go to the seminar, which starts at 7:00.

    Blake Discher

We will probably be back late (Around 10:30ish), the seminar is scheduled to end at 9:30.  There will also be a cocktail reception afterwards, so if anyone would like to meet area Kansas City photographers, it will be a great opportunity for that!

The seminar costs $10.00 for students, and you MUST register on the ASMP website before you go if you want to attend. Please register here: http://asmp.org/education/event/register?venue_id=176

After you have registered, please put your name and phone number on the sign-up sheet outside of checkout so we can contact you and know who is coming!

Also, please bring about $5 for gas money if you plan to ride with someone.  If you would like to drive on your own and meet us there, here is the address where the seminar is located:

Kansas City Marriott Country Club Plaza

    4445 Main Street

    Kansas City, MO

For more info, you can go to the following website: http://asmp.org/asmp-seminar-negotiating

I hope to see you there, it will be a very educational experience!!!

    The 24-Hour Cure

Hey, everyone, I hope you are having a great summer!
For anyone who is around the St. Louis area, I have a great oppurtunity for you to network with some local photographers. The photographer I am interning with this summer, Jeremy Deweese, is the president of the St. Louis chapter of ASMP. He started a charity called the 24-hour Cure to benefit the American Diabetes Association and to create community among area photographers. On November 7, 2008, photographers all over the St. Louis area photographed their life for 24 hours, and now their images will be display in the Sheldon Art Gallery. The images will be sold, and the proceeds will all be donated to the ADA.

On June 12, there will be an opening reception at the Sheldon from 5-7, and anyone is welcome to attend. There will most likely be free wine and food, and photographers from all over the St. Louis area will be there.

If you would like more information you can go to:
    The Sheldon
    The 24 Hour Cure Website

    Should be a great time!
